I was looking forward to seashell hunting during a negative low tide because last winter I noticed the tides were so much lower than we had ever seen them but we had no idea why! Only recently have I discovered what negative low tide is so of course I wanted to share what I had learned. Being from Northern NJ the tides were easy to figure out but down here they really confused us because we would be shelling at high tide but the tide actually looked really low and we didn't understand what was going on. Turns out the tides down here have 2 low tides and 2 high tides each day and after looking at a chart it started to make more sense.
Winters down here have some really low tides, so low they are actually negative low tides. Looking at a tide chart helped me see the pattern and now it all makes much more sense!
We found some great finds during our first negative low tide shelling excursion. I hope the winter continues to surprise and delight us!
