The Galeras Volcano, located in Colombia near the city of Pasto, is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in the world. On January 14, 1993, a tragic event occurred at this volcano that would mark a somber chapter in the history of volcanic research.  An international group of volcanologists gathered in Pasto for the UN Conference for Natural Disaster Reduction.
A group of scientists ascended Galeras, led by Dr. Stanley Williams, a renowned American volcanologist.  While they were at the crater's rim, Galeras unexpectedly erupted. The explosion was sudden and violent, releasing a pyroclastic surge of hot gases and volcanic material.
