With the advent of the Mazda CX-90, it is considered the successor or new generation model of the CX-9. However, Mazda decided to see it as a replacement for the CX-9 and change the name. Whether it is a successor or a replacement, the CX-90 has undergone many changes that are completely different from the CX-9, the only one remaining is the mid-size SUV vehicle category, because it is very different from the CX-9 in other respects.
For starters, the CX-90 was built from the ground up, meaning it has nothing in common with the model it replaces. It's based on an all-new platform, gaining more interior space by increasing the wheelbase and placing the engine in a longitudinal position. Although the overall length has only increased by 2.5 centimeters (total 5.1 meters), the wheelbase has increased by 19 centimeters, which means that there is more space in the cabin, especially the second and third row seats.
Design-wise, the CX-90 is nothing like the CX-9. It adopts the stylized lines of the appearance, coupled with the reflection of light and shadow, presenting a more elegant image, especially in the brand new red - artisan red. This design ethos is also reflected in the interior, including asymmetrical surfaces and materials with a visual and tactile quality that rivals that of high-end vehicles. From the front seats to the third row, the interior features Nappa leather and a blend of wood and aluminum trim with great attention to detail. High-end configurations also include a digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen with high-definition and high-quality graphics.
Among other things, the CX-90 was designed with ease of use and ride comfort in mind. The rear door can be opened at a 90-degree angle, making entry and exit more convenient. Double glazing provides even better sound insulation, and the floor and sides of the boot are completely flat for optimum front, side and rear visibility.
In terms of engine and handling, the CX-90 is a big step up from the CX-9. The CX-9 is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 228 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. And the CX-90 packs the most powerful engine Mazda has ever built: a 3.3-liter turbocharged six-cylinder that makes 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.
Additionally, the CX-90 gets an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (compared to a six-speed gear on the CX-9), allowing power to be sent to all four tires more efficiently. The car is also equipped with an electric assist system, which places the electric motor between the six-cylinder engine and the gearbox, which provides better dynamic response and acceleration performance. In addition, CX-90 also provides four driving modes to choose from, low center of gravity and sports attitude control system, through the cooperation of suspension and braking system, it can provide better balance and control feeling when turning. All of these improvements give the CX-90 an edge over the CX-9 in terms of ride comfort and cornering precision.
In terms of safety, the CX-90 is equipped with one more airbag system than the CX-9 because the CX-90's chassis and body are more resistant to collisions.
