Ancient temple known as Naranag Temple or Wangat Temple is one of the important archaeological sites of India. Located in the small picturesque village of Naranag near Wangat is the sacred Hindu Temple and an ancient Hindu pilgrimage site.
The temple is located almost 50 km from Srinagar in Ganderbal district and is 15 km away from Kangan town on Sonmarg, Leh road i.e National Highway 1A.
The temple is a Shiv Temple and is said to have been built and expanded in three-time intervals: In around 220 BC King Jaluka built the Shiva temples of Bhuteshwara, Jyestarudra, and Muthas. King Lalitaditya Muktipada (Naga Karakota Dynasty i.e Hindu Kashmiri Kayasthas) between 713 to 735 AD. Lastly, between 855 to 883 AD by King Avantivarman.  The shrine was looted by King Sangramraja of Kashmir (1003-28 AD), during the reign of King Uccala (1101-1111 AD). Naranag serves as a base camp to mount Harmukh and Gangabal lake regarded as Kailash and Mansarowar of Kashmir by Kashmiri Brahmins. However, the place is mostly visited for sightseeing.
Wangat Nala, a tributary of Sindh Nala (tributary of River Jhelum), flows near the site.
The Greco-Roman architecture of the Temple has its roots in the Gandhara Art. Naranag is a part of Kashmir’s most popular trekking corridor, the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek, or the Sonamarg-Vishansar-Gangabal - Naranag Trek. Naranag Temple complex is divided in to the eastern Complex and the western complex. The stone used in the Temple is the greyish granite which is found in abundance in the area. It is worth noting that the pyramidal roofs of ancient temples of Kashmir are fundamentally differs from the roofs of the temples of other parts of India. The ancient Hindu temples of Kashmir are simple, attractive and impressive but smaller in size than other parts of India and are single storied.
