Heat Transfer - Chapter 3 - Extended Surfaces (Fins)

In this video lecture, we discuss heat transfer from extended surfaces, or fins. Theses extended surfaces are designed to increase the rate of heat transfer (and reduce thermal resistance) by increasing the total surface area for convective heat transfer from a solid. We derive the fin equation and discuss how to solve it. We give a summary table for solutions to the fin equation (for fins of uniform cross-sectional area) under different tip conditions.
