1969 Mercedes AMG 300 SEL 6.8 Red Pig / AMG's so-called "Red pig" finished 2nd in the 24 Hours of Spa in 1971. This heavy Mercedes AMG 300 SEL 6.8 Red Pig with 6834 cc and 420 hp (313 kW) was fast, but frequent refuelling was necessary, and tire wear was also high. The Mercedes AMG 300 SEL 6.8 Red Pig was sold to French company Matra, they used it for tests of jet fighter landing gear. Five Mercedes AMG 300 SEL 6.8 Red Pig were made, three racers and two test cars. Last original works-built Waxenberger 1969 Mercedes AMG 300 SEL 6.8 Red Pig is in Mobilia Automotive Museum, Finland. AMG, now the sports tuning subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, but then a small local tuning company founded by former Mercedes engineers, produced special versions of the 6.3 to compete in racing events: Mercedes AMG 300 SEL 6.8 Red Pig, usually with the engine enlarged to 6.8 liters or more. The Mercedes AMG 300 SEL 6.8 Red Pig had an impressive, but short-lived racing career, due to the lack of suitable tires, or rule changes preventing the use of them.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 is a luxury car built by Mercedes Benz from 1968 to 1972. It featured the company's powerful Mercedes 6.3 litre M100 V8 from the luxurious Mercedes 600 limousine installed in the normally 6-cylinder powered Mercedes Benz 300 SEL.  In 1975, the Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 was introduced as a Mercedes 300SEL 6.3 successor with larger displacement, modifications to the equipment, and more power.
The Mercedes-Benz 600 was a large luxury automobile offered in several variants worldwide. Introduced in September 1963, its few competitors included certain models of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the Cadillac Fleetwood 75, stretched Lehmann-Peterson Lincoln, and the Chrysler Imperial Crown Ghia.

Generally, the short-wheel-base (SWB) Mercedes 600 models were designed to be owner-driven; the Mercedes long-wheel-base (LWB) 600, often incorporating a central divider with power window, was intended as chauffeur-driven.

Analogous to today's Mercedes S600, the Mercedes 600 was the company's flagship and most expensive Mercedes model of its time, surpassing both of its direct successors, the Mercedes 300SEL 6.3 and Mercedes 450SEL 6.9.
The Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 is a high-performance version of the Mercedes S-Class luxury saloon. It was built on its own assembly line by Daimler-Benz in Stuttgart, Germany and based on the Mercedes long-wheelbase version of the Mercedes W116 chassis introduced in 1972. The model was generally referred to in the company's literature as the Mercedes "6.9", to separate it from the regular Mercedes 450SEL.

The Mercedes 6.9 was first shown to the motoring press at the Geneva Auto Show in 1974, and produced between 1975 and 1981 in extremely limited numbers. It was billed as the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz car line, and the successor to Mercedes-Benz's original high-performance sedan, the Mercedes 300SEL 6.3. The Mercedes 6.9 also has the distinction of being among the first vehicles ever produced with optional electronically controlled anti-lock brakes, first introduced by Mercedes-Benz and Bosch in 1978. The Mercedes 6.9's successor — the top of range Mercedes 500 SEL — continued the Mercedes 6.9's self-leveling hydropneumatic suspension as an extra-cost option.
