Montenegro – Bar to Kolasin
Montenegro – Bar to Kolasin via the awesome Moraca Canyon. The first time I heard about Montenegro, I consulted an atlas to discover it was part of the old Yugoslavia, situated on the Adriatic coast, sharing borders with Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Serbia. My wife wanted sunshine and sandy beaches, I wanted a train ride, Montenegro offered both. The coastline was everything the brochures promised and the railway surpassed all my expectations. The train was well presented and our carriage looked as though it has just come out of the workshops after a full overhaul. The line starts by the Adriatic sea at Bar, skirting along the coast to Sutomore where it turns inland passing beneath the coastal mountain range, emerging from a long tunnel to cross the picturesque Lake Skadar on a causeway. The route continues across fertile farm land to the capital city “Podgorica”. Now our journey starts to get really dramatic as we enter the Moraca River Canyon, climbing ever higher, we cross the world’s highest railway bridge (until 2001) before plunging straight into another long tunnel, finally exiting into more stupendous mountain landscapes to re-join the Moraca Canyon for stunning views of the River far below. This is no ordinary train ride, take a seat and join me for a journey you are sure to remember for a long time to come.
