(7 Nov 2018) Hindu community in Pakistan celebrated the Hindu holiday of Diwali on Thursday with special prayers and celebrations at temples across the country.
At the Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Karachi, local Hindus had elaborate celebrations including fireworks and sharing of sweets.
They also made Rangolis, patterns and artwork made from coloured rice.
The festival lasts for five days and each day of celebrations is associated with different myths, legends and beliefs.
The word Diwali or Deepavali (in its full form), means 'a row of lamps'.
Traditionally the faithful offer prayers to the Hindu goddess of wealth, Laxmi, and the elephant-headed god Ganesh.
Ganesh is the God of knowledge, wisdom and good fortune whose blessings are especially sought by worshippers praying for prosperity.
In Hinduism, the origins of Diwali are traced to the Hindu God Rama's return home following 14 years in exile, after defeating the mythological demon Ravana and rescuing his abducted wife Sita.
Traditionally on Diwali, Hindus exchange gifts and sweets and spend time with family.
