On January 19, 1995, an X-31 experimental aircraft was making a routine test flight from the NASA Dryden Flight Research Centre when the chase pilot suddenly made a series of radio calls: "NASA One, We have an ejection!! We have an ejection!! The aircraft is descending over the North base area… I have a chute… The pilot’s out of the seat and the chute is good…" Despite the loss of the first prototype, the X-31 program proved to be a successful collaboration between the United States and Germany. In fact, the program was groundbreaking in more ways than one. The two only X-31 models ultimately carried out over 500 flights between 1990 and 1995, providing invaluable information for the design of next-generation highly maneuverable fighters. --- Join Dark Skies as we explore the world of aviation with cinematic short documentaries featuring the biggest and fastest airplanes ever built, top-secret military projects, and classified missions with hidden untold true stories.
