John F. Kennedy High School, located in Taylor, Michigan, has a rich and significant history that has contributed to the development of the local community and the education of countless students.
The high school was established in 1965, named in honor of the 35th President of the United States,
John F. Kennedy, who had just been assassinated two years prior in 1963. The school was built to accommodate the growing population of the metropolitan Detroit community of Taylor and was part of a larger effort to expand educational opportunities for that same community.
Throughout the years, John F. Kennedy High School has experienced significant growth and development. The school has consistently expanded its academic programs, extracurricular activities, and facilities to meet the changing needs of its student body. Notably, the school has maintained a strong focus on academic excellence, community involvement, and the holistic development of its students.
John F. Kennedy High School has been the recipient of various awards and recognition for its academic, athletic, and community service initiatives. The school has also produced notable alumni who have made significant contributions to various fields, further enhancing its reputation and impact. One of the most notable Kennedy High alumni, was 1995 World Series Champion and stand out all star pitcher, Steve Avery. Avery had a very successful career in Major League Baseball, most of his career spent with the Atlanta Braves. Still today, he is considered to be one of the greatest pitchers of all times. And as I'm sure you will see in the video his name, number, and records were still hanging proudly in the gym. Steve Avery graduated from Kennedy in 1988. Another notable alumni of JFK was one time musician and former hype man for Kid Rock, Joe C. whose untimely death in 2000 helped solidify his legacy. Joe C. graduated from Kennedy in 1993.
Unfortunately, the school district approved the closure of JFK high school in 2017 citing declining student enrollment, rising maintenance costs, and the school was not compliant with the American disability act. The school permanently closed in 2018 and merged with nearby Truman High School to become the newly formed Taylor High School.
The history of John F. Kennedy High School in Taylor, Michigan, reflects its enduring commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, and the overall wellbeing of its students. The school's journey from its initial inception to its final day is a standing testament to its resilience, adaptability, and unwavering dedication to its mission. John
F. Kennedy High School was finally demolished in November of 2023 and is now just a memory, but its history and accolades will remain an integral part of its identity and legacy for years to come.
