How to grow and harvest hazelnuts (filberts) at home, successfully!

Growing hazelnuts (filberts) at home or on a small farm can be easy, but it's different from how it's done on large commercial nut orchards.  We grow our hazelnuts as multi-stemmed bushes, not as trees with a single trunk.   This allows us to harvest them by hand as soon as they are ripe, before the jays and squirrels have a chance to strip the trees.  Unlike other nuts, hazelnuts ripen in summer, not fall.  Watch as Michael Dolan explains how we grow and harvest hazelnuts on a small organic farm.
