Metal Additive manufacturing facilities have been developed for 30 years now. Today applications are growing very rapidly in many industrials sectors and they are generating very intense research activity in laboratories.
For 15 years now, the Center of Materials (Mine ParisTech) has been very active in the process of metal additive manufacturing and more recently for ceramic processing. Their approaches include experimental analysis of the process on sample workpieces, in situ measurements of temperature and microstructural characterization. Numerical simulations at the macroscale were applied to predict the temperature evolution during forming.
The research activity at the CEMEF (Center for Material Forming, Mines ParisTech) was mainly devoted to numerical simulation of Selective Laser Melting, to get insight more precisely in laser energy transfer and powder melting at the micro level.
In close collaboration with both academic research centers, Transvalor is developing a new finite element code for simulating Selective Laser Material or Direct Metal Deposition processes. The macro model will allow the user to predict the deformation of the workpiece and the residual stress distribution. Later, the research version of the micro model developed at CEMEF will be industrialized by Transvalor in order to predict more local parameters at the vicinity of the laser impact.
