The history of Brownsville, Texas, dates back to the 1840s, when the area was part of Mexico. In 1846, the Mexican-American War began, and the United States Army built Fort Brown on the banks of the Rio Grande. The fort was named after Major Jacob Brown, who died during the war. After the war, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ceded the area to the United States.

In 1848, Charles Stillman, a businessman from Connecticut, founded the town of Brownsville on land near Fort Brown. The town was named after Stillman's friend, Major Brown.
Brownsville quickly grew into a major commercial center. The city's location on the Rio Grande made it a natural trading point between the United States and Mexico. Steamboat traffic on the river also helped to boost the city's economy.
In the 1850s, Brownsville became a center for the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. The city was captured by Union forces in 1865.
