If you are looking for the best, most gentle chicken breed for young children I have the answer for you.  The  Delaware is considered a heritage breed and is a friendly bird with a sweet personality that makes them ideal for families with children.  These same traits make them wonderful for the elderly who want to keep chickens as well.  They are semi endangered and not as popular as other well known breeds so can be harder to find. To make it easier for you I have left a link below to the hatchery I purchased mine from.  They arrived safely and in the best of health.  I do recommend this family hatchery as I have had great success with all my fowl purchases from them.
