You can see from the photos that hang in Ron Timm's home that he finds beauty in simple everyday objects that remind him of places or objects he likes. He snapped an artistic shot of an antique car because he likes car shows. He has many photos of colorful flowers. He snapped a photo of a boat that reminds him of Florida.

"I live quietly," said Timm. "I have a lot of fun and life is good."

Ron Timm had a health scare more than 25 years ago, so he quit working in a corporate environment of stress and deadlines and started pursing his passions. He started his own small business and started taking photos professionally.

"It changed my whole life," said Timm. "It's made a huge, huge difference and I highly recommend it."

Now, Timm teaches others how to live a simpler life through community education classes. For teaching material, he uses personal examples as well as information from some of the many books he's read on simple living.

"There are a lot of people who are tired of the rat race, and it's getting worse every year," said Timm.

Timm says learning to live on less starts with figuring out your priorities.

"You have to figure out what's important. Figure out how much you owe, how much you really need," said Timm.

He recommends finding ways to reduce your debt and live on less. This might mean reducing the size of your house, looking over ways to reduce utility bills, or finding cheaper ways to do what you love.

"There's cheap movies, community theater, and free art openings. Those are things you can have a lot of fun and not spend a lot of money," said Timm.

Ron Timm will be offering more insight into simpler living in a community ed session called "Living Better on Less" on Sept. 18 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Crystal Community Center. The event is open to seniors and the $2 fee includes the class and a continental breakfast. It is sponsored by the cities of New Hope, Crystal, Robbinsdale, Brooklyn Center and Senior Services of District 281.

Seniors must register by September 13 by calling the New Hope Parks and Recreation Department at 763-531-5151.
