The Silent e
He may be silent in each word!
But, he has the power to change the word!
He makes the vowel say its name!
He changes the short vowel into a long vowel!

The Rule: In words where “e” comes at the end, the vowel in the middle has a long sound.

Short ‘a’ CVC words to Long ‘a’ CVC-e words
The short vowel a, /ă/.
The long vowel a, /ā/.
Examples:
mat /măt/ becomes mate /māt/.
fat /făt/ becomes fate /fāt/.
cap/căp/ becomes cape /cāp/.

Short ‘i’ CVC words to Long ‘i’ CVC-e words
Short vowel i, /ĭ/.
Long vowel i, /ī/.
Examples:
hid  /hĭd/ becomes hide /hīd/,
rid /rĭd/ becomes ride /rīd/,
fin /fĭn/ becomes fine /fīn/.

Short ‘o’ CVC words to Long ‘o’ CVC-e words
Short vowel o, /ŏ/.
Long vowel o, /ō/.
Examples:
cod /cŏd/ becomes code /cōd/.
rob /rŏb/ becomes robe /rōb/.
rod /rŏd/ becomes rode /rōd/.

Short ‘u’ CVC words to Long ‘u’ CVC-e words
Short vowel u, / ŭ /.
Long vowel u, / ū /.
Examples:
cub /cŭb/ becomes cube /cūb/.
tub /tŭb/ becomes tube /tūb/.
hug /hŭg/ becomes huge /hūg/.
