Update Oct. 11, 2016: Samsung has officially discontinued the Galaxy Note 7 due to concerns about battery fires. We assume the company believed that after 2 recalls, trust and interest in the phone would be greatly diminished. RIP Samsung Galaxy Note 7.

Lisa Gade reviews the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, Samsung’s flagship for 2016 that replaces the Galaxy Note 5 (there is no Note 6!).

The Note 7 has a 5.7” Super AMOLED 2560 x 1440 display that supports touch and the included S Pen (Wacom EMR active digitizer) with 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity. The display’s sides are curved and the phone is made of Gorilla Glass 5 and metal. Like recent competing high end Android smartphones, it has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 quad core CPU with Adreno 530 graphics. It has 4 gigs of RAM and 64 gigs of internal storage plus a microSD card slot compatible with cards up to 256 gigs.

The phone has myriad features including IP68 water resistance, both a fingerprint and iris scanner, LTE 4G, WiFi calling, VoLTE, NFC, fast charging over USB-C and fast wireless charging. It has the same excellent cameras as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge: 12MP rear with 4K video recording and a front 5MP camera. This Android 6 Marshmallow phone with a much improved TouchWiz UI lists for $879 in the US and it’s available in silver, black, coral blue (gold available outside the US in some countries).

** Shorty after launch, the Note 7 faced a recall due to concerns about the battery igniting (some batteries were defective). Samsung is now shipping what are supposed to be safe units and are replacing phones from the suspect batch via recall.
