Bacterial Growth curve has four phases: 1. Lag Phase 2. Log Phase / Exponential Phase 3. Stationary Phase 4. Death Phase Lag Phase: It is the early part of the growth. When culture is inoculated, there is no active cell division because the bacteria is preparing to divide. Log Phase: In this phase rapid exponential cell division occurs. Bacterial cell divides very rapidly utilizing the nutrients in the culture media and secreting waste products. Stationary Phase: When enough of the nutrients in the media is utilized and enough of the waste products accumulates, bacterial growth reaches stationary phase. In this stage rate of cell growth is approximately equals to the rate of cell death. That’s the reason we don’t see increase in the bacterial cell number. Death Phase: As the nutrients are used up and the accumulation of waste products, bacterial growth enters death phase. In this stage rate of cell death exceeds the rate of cell division. So there is overall decrease in the amount of bacteria in the culture.
