Shadow Climate Change and Energy Minister Ted O’Brien has slammed Chris Bowen’s fuel efficiency standards as an “outright tax” on Australia’s favourite cars.

Under the new standards, vehicle manufacturers will have to produce more fuel-efficient cars for consumers which is expected to increase prices.

Mr O’Brien says the average Australian will not be able to afford some of the country’s most loved cars, including the Toyota Land Cruiser and Ford Ranger.

“This is an outright tax – mums and dads can’t afford it,” Mr O’Brien told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

“When you talk to the dealers themselves, they are worried that Australia’s most favourite vehicles might actually be pulled off the Australian market just so that the manufacturers can meet Chris Bowen’s targets.”
