"As for describing Israel with racism, it is a racism that has no precedent and it has gone beyond Nazism to some extent. I will give you examples and you have to be the judge. One of the (Israeli) ministers said that the solution to Palestine is the deportation of the Arabs and the Palestinians from Palestine and that that would ensure the preservation of the purity of the Jewish race."

"We live in the Middle East region which is a troubled region. And we, in Syria, aim to have our region free from any type of weapons for regional stability and peace. As such, it makes sense that we are opposed to the proliferation of arms in any area of the world."

"Syria is committed to the United Nations resolution and we all believe - all the international community believe - that the resolution is helping ceasing the tension. So Syria is committed to these resolutions and I think that this is very essential. Without this resolution, without this reference of the Madrid conference in early 1991, its impossible to have peace."

STORYLINE:

Accusing the new Israeli regime of racism, Syrian President Bashar Assad on Thursday stated he held little hope of reaching a peace accord with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

The new Syrian leader made the comments while on a state visit to Spain where he met with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar.

Assad cited the killing in recent months of hundreds of Palestinians by Israeli troops, and calls from within Israel that Palestinians should be eliminated from the region and that those in Israel should wear distinctive tags like Jews in Nazi Germany.

Asked if he thought Syria could sign a peace accord with Israel, Assad said he held little hope following the Israelis' election of Ariel Sharon, with his repressive military past, and the country's refusal to adhere to United Nations resolutions.

Tension with Syria has escalated since Israel bombed a Syrian radar station in Lebanon last month, in retaliation for attacks by Syrian-supported guerrillas.

Assad, who has previously labelled Sharon a "war criminal", also ruled out the possibility of any deal ever being
signed between Israel and Syria that would involved resolving the Palestinian problem.

Assad also dismissed the recent Jordanian-Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire to allow the peace process to resume, adding that he didn't believe any proposals would have success until Israel abided by the U-N's resolutions.

Thursday is Assad's second day of visit to Spain, his first to a western nation since taking power last year following the death of his father, Hafez Assad.

Assad is holding talks with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar on bilateral relations and Syria's bid for an associate accord with the European Union.

Assad will travel to Paris and Berlin on Friday.
