Located on the southeastern coast
Located on the southeastern coast of Spain, Mijas belongs to the region of Costa del Sol Occidental. On its center is a typical Andalusian white-washed village, called Mijas Pueblo which is located on a mountainside about 430 meters or 1,476 feet above sea level, in the heart of the Costa del Sol region.
Inhabited since the ancient times, Mijas was a small town dedicated mainly to agriculture, fishing and mineral extraction until the explosion of the tourist boom in the 1950s. During that time, an asbestos factory was built to reduce unemployment and the first small hotel was built because of the growing fame of the Costa del Sol. With the advent of tourism, the towns such as La Cala and Las Lagunas began construction of residential urban residential areas.
A peculiar transport method in Mijas called the "Burrotaxis," appeared in the late 1059s, following some quarry workers returning to their homes by donkey, were required by tourists to photograph or take a walk. Today, during the summer many tourists come to Mijas to visit this peculiar means of transport. Tourists with burrotaxis also take a walk through the best known streets thus making a tourist guide. A special car park for the donkeys with their carriages are located at the Avenida del Compás.
When it comes to the gastronomic aspect, aside from the many international restaurants that exist, Mijas' cuisine is based above all on the rich and varied first courses, due to its wide variety of soups. These include salmorejo, maimones, cachorreñas and gazpachuelo. Sweets such buñuelos and hornazos are inherited form the Arab times.
Due to its proximity to the sea, Mijas enjoys semi-tropical temperatures with winter days being mostly warm and hot and agreeable, and days of hot and very hot weather from May until October. During the months of July and August the temperatures are very hot, hovering around 30C. At night during the winter, it can be occasionally chilly but with only an occasional light frost. The municipality enjoys about 2,920 hours of sunshine a year.
