The distinguished singer Khairul Anam Shakil was born to a musically inclined family. He completed a course at Chhayanaut Sangeet Bidyayatan and took initial lessons in classical music from Narayan Chandra Basak, of Pabna. He later trained under Ustad Sagiruddin Khan for an extended period. Shakil’s prowess in Nazrul Sangeet developed under the tutelage of his uncle Mahmudur Rahman Benu, Sheikh Lutfur Rahman, Sohrab Hossain, Anjali Roy, and Nilufar Yasmeen, among others. Khairul Anam Shakil currently teaches Nazrul Sangeet at Chhayanaut and Dhaka University. He is the Vice-President of Chhayanaut and a trustee of the Nazrul Institute. He received the Nazrul Puroskar in 2017 and the Ekushey Padak in 2019.

Joy hok joy hok is an iconic song by Kazi Nazrul Islam that speaks fervently of the triumph of truth. The stirring rhythm and tune have made the song a top favourite in the patriotic genre. It describes how parity, peace and enlightenment will break the fetters of injustice. Shakil’s rich baritone articulates the nuances of Nazrul’s tune and the emotional tinge of the song with great clarity and care, making it a wonderful listening experience. The song was performed by Khairul Anam Shakil at Ganer Jhornatolay on the third day of the Srijone O Shekore arts festival. The artist was accompanied on stage by Enamul Haque Omar on the Tabla, Asit Biswas in the Esraj, Nasir Uddin in the Guitar, and Binod Roy in the Keyboard.

To celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence, Bengal Foundation organised Srijone O Shekore, a 5-day arts festival, from 14 to 18 December 2021, at Bengal Shilpalay, Dhaka. Supported by BRAC Bank, the festival featured performing arts, visual art, crafts, books, film, readings, and events for children. Over 300 singers-musicians-dancers-craftspersons-artists performed on stage and engaged in various kinds of programming at the festival, over the five days.

The composer-poet Kazi Nazrul Islam (25th May 1899 - 29th August 1976) emerged from the Bengal Renaissance of the 19th century, a period that saw a unique blend of religious and social reformers, patriots, scientists, literary giants and cultural activists. This was the time when great Bengali composer-poets, Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Atul Prasad Sen, Rajanikanta Sen and Dwijendralal Roy, flowered as Pancha-kobi (penta-poets).

Within the short span of Nazrul’s creative life (in 1941 he lost his speech and memory to disease), he had composed four thousand songs apart from other literary and journalistic works. His songs changed from the rebellious to religious explorations at a later stage. He delved deep in both Hindu and Islamic practices and extensively composed over five hundred devotional songs. Nazrul was an expert in Hindustani classical music, and created over a dozen new ragas. His determinedly anti-fundamentalist and astonishingly inclusive writings, his repeated imprisonment for his outspoken criticism of British imperialism, and the depth of his cultural explorations once inspired entire generations of revolutionaries, including freedom fighters in both India and Bangladesh. His message remains as relevant today as it was all decades ago.
