Staining is much easier before
Staining is much easier before construction. But once built, using a sprayer is the way to go, particularly when working on a vertical structure like a fence or a pergola.
Depending on the situation, you may very well need to do some prep in terms of sanding, cleaning the wood and/or masking off anything you don't want affected by overspray. I also suggest using a high quality stain. It is definitely worth it!
In this case, I used Ready Seal exterior wood stain in Pecan, No. 115. When they say, "No Laps, No Runs, No Streaks," they mean it! It took 2 gallons to stain my pergola measuring 11' x 11' and the wood is Douglas Fir.
The sprayer is a Wagner Xtra Duty. It worked quite well with this stain. I followed the clean up instructions carefully so that I can use this again in the future.
I really enjoy reading comments and hearing how others handle their projects. Always learning, always doing.
Thank you for watching!
