Matt Clifford is the cofounder and CEO of Entrepreneur First, a London-based organisation that invests in and accelerates early-stage tech companies. It now says that its companies are worth more than $10bn combined and has success stories like finance management app Cleo and AI platform Tractable among its portfolio.

Last year he also took up a new position as the chair of the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) — a UK-based organisation to help fund deeptech companies.
And finally, if he wasn’t busy enough, last week he announced that he’s been appointed as an advisor on artificial intelligence to the UK government. The AI sector is having a bit of a moment right now — with OpenAI recently releasing its latest generative AI model, GPT-4, which has got a lot of people very excited.

But one thing that’s notable with this current AI boom is Europe being notable absent among the main players, as big tech companies like Microsoft and Google seem to be increasingly owning the space.

So how can the UK and Europe compete when it comes to AI, and how can we support early-stage founders working on high-risk, but high-potential technology?
