Rest in Peace Bruce Swedien,
Rest in Peace Bruce Swedien, my favorite sound engineer of all times.
I made a short review of his lecture at Full Sail University in 2011 where Swedien talked about what he knows and loves most – music.
And talk he did – over the course of three hours, the unmoderated event touched upon nearly every step of the man's lifelong career. Over the course of three hours, the unmoderated event touched upon nearly every step of the man's lifelong career.
Students were able to ask questions throughout the presentation and interact with Swedien as he talked about his recording techniques in the studio, his philosophy and outlook on life and music, and his work with Michael Jackson. Throughout the event, he cued up songs that he recorded throughout his career and shared his own personal anecdotes about the session and artist.
Giving credits to his wife Bea, who he has been married with for almost 70 years, as well to his parents who let him do what he loved most. Talking also about Dutch guitarist Eddy van Halen, his use of the U47 Neumann microphones, the ribbon mic RCA 44BX and Shure 7M. But also about Vinyl vs CD and Digital. Great advice for young sound and studio engineers and any producer who really live for the music!

Grammy-winning engineer/producer Bruce Swedien has had a hand in classic recordings that have helped to define the genres of pop and jazz. But most might know him as the 20+ years being the sound engineer for Michael Jackson, who recorded, mixed, and assisted in producing MJ's Thriller album.
He started working with Quincy Jones in 1977 on the “Roots” TV soundtrack. With Michael Jackson was involved in “The Wiz” soundtrack in ’78, and 1979 brought “Off the Wall.” For most of the next 20 years or so, Bruce was wrapped with Michael, with Quincy’s other projects, Patti Austin, James Ingram, George Benson, and all their hits. (“Give Me the Night” by George Benson, one of many outstanding records.).
