Punctate Epithelial Keratitis (PEK)
The punctate epithelial keratitis (PEK) is a distinct clinical entity characterized by coarse, raised intraepithelial lesions surrounded by focal inflammatory cells, with punctate staining as well as areas of negative staining on fluorescein. PEK is often a clinical picture common to various cornea pathologies.
What is Optometry?
According to World Health Organization: "Optometry is a healthcare profession that is autonomous, educated, and regulated (licensed/registered), and optometrists are the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of disease in the eye, and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system"
Public Health Optometry:
"Public Health Optometry is a hybrid discipline that combines the principles of public health and optometry where an optometrist applies the principles of both the specialties to reach out to the communities to provide care, promote eye health and train community level eye care workers."
Public Health:
"The science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and improving quality of life through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals."
Optometry and Leadership:
The optometry profession has perhaps historically discussed leadership and management mainly within the context of business and practice management, and as such has not engaged all clinicians. However, it is important for all optometrists to understand that in the face of NHS changes and increasing clinical responsibilities, leadership skills are essential to enable them to deliver a safe and efficient service to patients.
