What’s it really like to be a Drill Sergeant? In the US Army, drill sergeants are noncommissioned officers responsible for coaching and mentoring new recruits, turning them from civilians into soldiers through Basic Combat Training. A drill sergeant starts every day with their soldiers before dawn, and stays with them until lights out, preparing them for life in the Army the entire time. This includes everything from making a bed, to wearing a uniform, maintaining physical fitness and military discipline, or handling a rifle. Drill sergeants are also supposed to lead by example, demonstrating leadership and providing a role model for new soldiers.

They are selected through an extensive and strenuous selection and training process at a Drill Sergeant Academy, where candidates master combat drills and become experts in all aspects of the military lifestyle. Those who are selected can expect to work long, stressful hours and have an enormous amount of responsibility. Yet even with these drawbacks, it remains a highly desirable position, as drill sergeants will have an impact on soldiers for the rest of their lives.
