Since the Curies’ discovery of radium and polonium in 1889 the usefulness of radioactive materials has always been difficult to balance with its hazardous nature. Marie Curie herself died of cancer caused by exposure to radiation during her research. Thompson and Rutherford used experimental evidence to develop models of the atom. When Rutherford’s Nuclear model replaced Thompson’s Plum Pudding model, Nuclear Physics was born. Eventually the Bohr model superseded Rutherford’s as the accepted model of the structure of the atom, with protons and neutrons in a small dense nucleus, orbited by electrons in discrete energy levels. Today the use of radioisotopes is carefully controlled, and they find essential uses in medicine, industry, farming and electrical power stations. The Bohr model explains the evidence at GCSE level. The Nucleus consists of protons and neutrons. Protons are positive, neutrons are neutral. Electrons are negative. Electrons obit at fixed distances which we call energy levels. Nuclei are stable or unstable due to the composition of the nucleus. Nuclei decay to become more stable. Nuclear decay is random. Activity – the rate at which a source of radiation decays. Measured in Bequerel (Bq) Count rate – the number of decays picked up by a detector. Contamination – radioactive material becomes present on other materials. A contaminated object becomes a source of radiation once a contaminating source is removed. Contaminated objects become radioactive! Irradiation – exposure to radioactive particles. An irradiated object does not become a source of radiation when an irradiating source is removed. Irradiated objects do not become radioactive!
