The top spot is only ever held by 3 different clubs. Everton, Aston Villa and Manchester United. Everton hold the top spot for the best part of 100 years with Aston Villa the only side to knock them off the top stop on occasions. Manchester United take over at the top in 1984 and have been in first place ever since.

Notts County and Preston North End manage to stay amongst the top clubs for some time.
