After 25 years Channel 7's Today Tonight was axed with Friday 29th November, 2019, being the last episode.
The Seven News will now run for a full hour, between 6pm and 7pm, as it has in the eastern states since 2014, when the show’s former eastern state versions were all cancelled.
Today Tonight was the only locally produced current affairs program up until Flashpoint went to air earlier this year.
Over the past 25 years, the show has built a loyal fan base covering a range of stories from dodgy landlords to heartwarming features on the personal stories of West Australians.
Earlier this year, Today Tonight began a campaign to save young cancer patient Amelia “Milli” Lucas, and only last month helped drive a backyard renovation for the family of meningococcal survivor Robbie Buchan.
Veteran journalist Mark Gibson tweeted after the news broke, saying he was “enormously proud” of the stories the show had produced in the 11 years he had been involved.
Some staff are expected to be re-deployed to the newsroom while other positions will be made redundant.
The shock move comes after Sunday Night aired its final episode on Sunday 24th November, after broadcasting for over a decade in a blow for current affairs coverage on the network.
