What is the reason why the indirect Coomb’s test is done 2 to 3 times in your pregnancy are to check for the antibody formation in the mother. When the mother is Rh negative and the husband is Rh positive, the baby could be either negative or positive, this Rh is a protein which is found in the red blood cells of the human beings. So the other does not have that protein, while the father has. So if the baby has that protein and if there is mixing of blood between the mother and the baby’s blood, then the baby’s blood will pass on to the mother’s system the mother might recognize it as a foreign body and start producing antibodies against it, which is like a fighter’s army, which is to take are of that foreign element. So these antibodies can be very harmful to the babies health and can lead to anaemia and cause a condition called as hydrops fetalis can develop in the baby, even leading to the death of the baby inutero. So this indirect Coomb’s test we want to see if the antibodies are already generated in the mother’s system or not. That is done at the tome when you first visit the doctor at the time of pregnancy being  confirmed and it is repeated again at 28 weeks. Once it is found to be native, then you can safely take one injection anti D which will protect you from the formation of these antibodies further and indirectly protect your baby from any harm.
