FRANCE MODEL CARS
World championships highlights.

120 competitors from fourteen countries have been vying for honours in the World Model Car Racing Championships at Grenoble in France from July 9 to 13. Although the cars are small, and their drivers stand on the side of the track to steer them, the event is taken seriously and is seen as a mini Le Mans. Local dignitaries attend, there's an official commentator and even pit-stops for brake checks. The cars weigh between 2.5 and three kilograms. They have four motorised wheels, disc brakes, hydraulic suspension and in some cases dual gears. Their average speed is 40 to 50 kilometres per hour but they can reach 80 km per hour. The 265 metre track is over uneven ground with several difficult bends to test the controllers' skills. In the fifth qualifying round held on July 11 there were two heats to select winners for the final. In the first heat victory went to Denis Salle in 10 minutes 30.2 seconds, while Pierre Beadoux won the second heat, completing 17 laps in 10.25.3.
