The Corpus Callosum is a thick bundle of nerves that connects the left and right cerebral hemispheres, allowing for interhemispheric communication.  It is the largest white matter structure in the brain, consisting of hundreds of millions of nerve fibers that reach out into every major cortex in the brain.  Also known as the callosal commissure, this unique region of the brain is much like a biological motherboard, connecting many parts of the brain and integrating countless processes.

Associated functions include:
Connecting the left and right hemispheres, allowing information to pass between them, and transferring motor, sensory, and cognitive information.
Integration of cognitive activities, body movements, and sensory information between left and right sides of the body and brain.

Case Study: Musical training has shown to increase plasticity of the corpus callosum during a sensitive period of time in development. The implications are an incresed coordination of hands, improvement with interhemispheric communication, and increased hemispheric symmetry and synchronization of sensorimotor areas.

Damage to this area may result in coma or vegetative state, mutism, memory impairment, split brain syndrome resulting in a number of subtle, cognitive movement and perceptual difficulties.

Reductions in corpus callosum volume have been associated with schizophrenia and the onset of psychotic episodes. Abnormalities in corpus callosum morphology have also been observed in Alzheimer's patients and children with ADHD, as well as in a large number of non-cognitive disorders.
