RAF Music performs Klaas Coulembier's Resilience live at Regent Hall, London.
Resilience was commissioned by the Royal Harmony Ypriana of Ypres (Belgium). The creation of the work took place during the concert series "Ypres As We Remember" on 30 April 2015. The assignment for this work was to write a composition that fits in with the commemoration of World War I, without putting war itself at the centre but considering how the war is commemorated, especially in and around Ypres.
Klaas Coulembier was born in Ypres (Belgium) in 1984. At the age of 11, he joined the Royal Ypriana Wind Band as a trumpet player, where he discovered the rich sound world of the wind band. He studied musicology at the University of Leuven, where he obtained his PhD in 2012 and was a postdoctoral research fellow until 2018. He is currently active as a freelance musicologist, composer and graphic designer. He plays the trumpet in several wind bands and is a cornet player in Festival Brass Band. He made his debut as a composer with Menin Gate Memorial Suite (2007), a 30-minute cantate for wind band and choir.
