Today, Viola, Maria and I
Today, Viola, Maria and I are visiting Cafe Saraswat, a small place with very big flavours in Thana, Cortalim, Goa
Cafe Saraswat
Off NH66, Cortalim old road (Datta Mandir road), Thana, Cortalim, Mormugao, Goa
Google Maps location: maps.app.goo.gl/vZAgvGJCfTfkBncg6
Costs we paid: Kingfish curry rice plate Rs 190, modso curry rice plate Rs 180, veg thali Rs 100, prawns plate Rs 350
To get to Cafe Saraswat, stay below the new Zuari bridge, whether coming from the Panjim or Margao side. We came towards Cortalim from the south, so we turned right under the flyover towards Thana market. Then we took the first left on Cortalim Old Road towards the panchayat. A short distance ahead, on the left, is Cafe Saraswat.
Someone told us that this place is small but has authentic Goan Saraswat flavours so we are excited because the Saraswat fish curry is awesome.
This cafe may not remain small for very long. We stepped out to see the garden, as we were told that soon Cafe Saraswat will have tables in the garden as well
Back inside, we started with a refreshing kokum drink, a very good drink to have in the summer because it actually cools you down
Today, Viola is having her favourite kingfish curry rice plate and I am having modso. Maria as always prefers the veg thali. As we wait for lunch, we are sharing tips on the best places for cheap yet tasty and filling fish curry rice plates
Maria’s veg rice plate has chapati, dal, green peas bhaji, potato and beans bhaji, sal kari, curd, onion, pickle and papor, all for Rs 100
In Viola and my kingfish and modso plates, the curry is of bangdo. They also gave an egg bhurji. The bangdo curry was made with teflam (triphala; Sichuan pepper) and was nice and spicy and also sour. Viola was very happy with the egg bhurji. Very tasty, Saraswat style. We all liked the egg in the fish curry rice plates. The curry was absolutely fantastic. The fried fish was also perfectly fried. It’s true that the smaller, non flashy places in Goa have some of the best, home-style food
Quite soon, they asked us if we want more fish curry
We decided to get some fried prawns also. They gave us 12 really good sized prawns for Rs 350. The prawns were piping hot and absolutely fantastic. We all gorged on the prawns. It was awesome to end our meal with these delicious crispy prawns. Who needs dessert?
Finally we had our sol kari. It was one of the best we’ve had
We remembered to pay our bill, which was not even Rs 1,000 for all that food, but we forgot to film it. We also forgot to film our faces while discussing the food on the way home
Cafe Saraswat is a simple roadside eatery in Thana, Cortalim but sometimes appearances can deceive because some of these small roadside places have just amazing food.
