I purchased seven highly-rated document
I purchased seven highly-rated document cameras from Amazon to find the best one for teachers. All of these USB document cameras are priced under $100 and they are all rated as 4 stars or higher on Amazon. I purchased these budget document cameras with my own money (not sponsored) as I was looking for the best cheap document camera that I could use with my art classes. Since my classroom budget is small, I wanted a best cheap document camera that I could use at school and at home for online classes during virtual learning days.
*Prices have fluctuated since I started reviewing these document cameras, but they all remain sub-$100 document cameras.
All but one of these cameras have 8 MP cameras and microphones for recording. During my testing, I found that all of these document cameras are plug-and-play meaning that they were all immediately recognized by my computers when I plugged them in (no firmware or additional software required). All of these cheap document cameras were seen right away by Zoom, the computer's built-in camera app and Quicktime. I included a sample video for each camera so that you could get an idea of what a video from each of these doc cams looks and sounds like. I did not edit the sound or the levels of the audio and you will notice some record quieter than others. I recommend headphones to get a real idea of how it sounds during the A/V segments.
These document cameras can all be used without any additional software by using the document camera with your computer's camera app, Zoom, Quicktime or OBS. However, for the best experience and the most options, I recommend using each of these document cameras with some type of document camera software. That is where you will get document camera features like annotation, image flip, exposure control, freeze frame, grid lines, stop motion, timelapse and resolution selection. A few of the cheaper document cameras on this list, came without any type of document camera software....but I discovered that Ipevo's Visualizer software is agnostic and I was able to run it with document cameras from other brands (very cool!).
While the microphones in these cameras are not going to compare to a dedicated mic, there were a few that sounded much better than others. If you are going to do a lot of recording, I would recommend a cheap USB mic over most of these but there are definitely some usable devices in this list.
An important thing to note is that I am using these document cameras for work on school-issued devices. Because of this, I do not have complete control over what software I can use. If a software requires a hard drive installation, it will not install without intervention from our tech department. Because of this, I only considered document cameras that could run on browser-based software (such as with a Chrome extension). For this document camera review, I tested each of the document cameras on an old Dell Chromebook and on a M1 Macbook Pro. Both of these computers are work devices with installation limitations in place. This was a very important consideration to me and I am sure there are other teachers with this same type of restriction in place.
So which is the best cheap document camera for 2023? I whittled the list down from 7 to my top 4 cheap document cameras. Check the links and the video and tell me what you think. I purchased these with my own money so I could not buy as many as I wanted...there are other document cameras that I considered.
