The temporal muscle, also known as the temporalis, is a flat, fan shaped muscle of mastication on the lateral side of the skull. It arises from the temporal fossa, a large depression on the side of the skull, and the temporal fascia, which completely covers the surface of the muscle. From there, the muscle descends through the gap between the zygomatic arch and the skull forms a thick tendon and inserts at the coronoid process of the mandible.
The temporal muscle is innervated by the deep femoral nerve. The function of this muscle can be divided between two parts: anterior and posterior. While the anterior part is involved in moving the mandible forward (protrusion), the posterior part is involved in pulling the mandible backwards.
In this video, we take you through the ins and outs of the temporal muscle, step by step. We cover:
0:10 Definition and location of the temporal muscle
0:20 Origin of the temporal muscle
0:32 Insertion of the temporal muscle
0:44 innervation of the temporal muscle
0:58 Function of the temporal muscle
