The Great Stink of London, also known as the "Great Stink," occurred in the summer of 1858. This event is a significant episode in London's history, primarily due to its profound impact on public health, urban planning, and the city's infrastructure. By the mid-19th century, London was the largest city in the world, with a population exceeding 2.5 million. However, the city's sanitation infrastructure had not kept pace with its rapid growth. Most of the waste from homes, businesses, and industries was dumped into the River Thames or left in cesspools. The river, which flowed through the heart of the city, became an open sewer, filled with human waste, industrial effluents, and dead animals.
