The Ainu are the indigenous peoples of Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido, and surrounding areas, who have their own language, and beliefs, including that spirits reside in all things.
In this series, we visit areas in Hokkaido with deep connections to the Ainu living there and showcase their prayers, dances, and traditional ceremonies passed down through generations.

Part 3 of a 5-part series. Shiranuka, Hokkaido. A town with a population of about 7,000 people, blessed with rich nature overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Hompe is a traditional festival of the Ainu people held every summer.
This episode will share the preparations, as well as the festival itself, and efforts to encourage the Ainu youth to carry on the traditions and history of the Shiranuka region.
We visit the settings of Ainu legends such as Pasicl Swamp and the Ainu cultural activity facility Uresipa (nurturing each other) Cise (home). See how the Ainu pass down the pride in their culture from parent to child, as we learn about the spiritual essence of the Ainu.
