The iconic Mercedes-Benz SL roadster enters a new generation for 2024, bringing a host of updates while retaining the core elements that have defined this model for decades. The AMG-tuned SL43 serves as the new entry point into the performance lineup with an intriguing mix of power, comfort and style.
Under the long hood lies a turbocharged 2.0L inline-four putting out a solid 375 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. This new four-cylinder represents a departure from the previous V6 base engine, but still delivers sports car acceleration, hitting 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds on the way to a top speed of 170 mph.
The SL43 incorporates a number of weight saving measures including an all-new aluminum and composite frame. Despite the smaller engine, it retains the rear-wheel drive configuration that purists expect. The SL43 also comes equipped with AMG tuning for the suspension, brakes and steering for sharper reflexes.
Mercedes' elegant and iconic SL styling makes a graceful transition to the latest generation with sleek proportions wrapped around the two-seat cabin. The power-folding soft top can be raised or lowered in under 20 seconds, preserving cargo space when stowed. The SL43 glides on 19-inch wheels at every corner.
Inside, Mercedes loads the SL43 with upscale amenities like massaging seats, climate control vents behind the headrests, and a large 12.3-inch touchscreen display. The digital gauge cluster keeps drivers informed while a head-up display projects key data right into the windshield. The tiny rear seats are best used for additional storage rather than passengers.
The new SL43 incorporates the latest intelligent driving aids to assist the driver. Tech like blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and rear cross-traffic alert comes standard. Drivers can also opt for systems that provide even more assistance if desired.
