In this Australia Before the British-video, I look at Australian Aboriginal contact with Indonesian fishermen prior to European colonization. In order to do that, I enlist the help of Antoinette Schapper and her article in the Australian Journal of Linguistics from 2021, an article in which she looks at loanwords in northern Australian Aboriginal languages, loanwords from different Austronesian languages found in present-day Indonesia. It turns out that this is all connected to the sea cucumber trade that developed in the early 1700s (or perhaps even earlier), and in which the Indonesian fishermen sort of became the middle-men, as it were, selling the sea cucumber to the Chinese. It is not only the genes of Australian Aborigines of part-Indonesian descent that paint a clear picture, the loanwords do as well… #AboriginalAustralians, #AustralianAborigines, #AustraliaBeforeTheBritish,
