It was July 9, 1930, around 4 p.m. when second-shift laborers working in the Kurt shaft in Hausdorf (now Jugów) felt a shock and heard a loud bang that released significant amounts of carbon dioxide. The gas killed everyone working nearby almost instantly. Another explosion resulted the death of nearly over a hundred miners. Its force was so huge that over 300 tons of rocks and coal hit the mining trenches. It was a trap with no exit. The shock wave took everything it encountered.
It was one of the largest mining disasters in European history and it took place in the Wacław mine in Owl Mountains.
This is the dramatic story of events from 93 years ago.
