Mule deer subspecies can be found from Mexico to the edge of the Arctic Circle, and as a general rule, the rut is shorter and more intense in northern latitudes than in southern.  This is due to the fact that a fawn born too early or too late in a cold climate will have a reduced chance for survival, but warmer locations present a larger optimal timeframe for birthing fawns.  For much of North America, the mule deer are in the rut right now - mid- to late-November.  In this week’s Sporting Classics with Chris Dorsey, the hunt is on for big muleys in Utah.
