Many violinists make the mistake of clamping down with the head when using a shoulder rest without realising  that this is very detrimental and leads to soreness and pain in the neck, shoulder and left arm. Treating the head as a rigid unmoving clamp that secures the violin in one place is to misunderstand the relationship between the head and the left hand. The shoulder rest should help to free all the left side muscles instead of restrict them. Let's look at solutions together...Mary
