Datsun 240Z L28 stroker – how to lock a distributor

As part of my ignition only Megasquirt build I need to lock out the distributor advance.  This video details how I went about it.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT

Standard Datsun L series distributors have two means in which to advance timing.  These are vacuum and mechanical advance.

When using an ECU to control distributor based ignition, locking out the native advance mechanisms is normally required.  Typically the ECU will calculate the advance at a given RPM from a number of parameters and sensors.  Locking the distributor provides the ECU with an ignition advance datum.

In the case for this build, the vacuum advance appears strong enough to prevent movement if a vacuum is not applied and I’ll leave the vacuum advance disconnected.

To lock out the mechanical advance I’ve used two part epoxy putty to fill the calibrated slots in the ‘T’ please to prevent movement of the counterweights and advancing behaviour.  There are a number of ways to lock out the distributor different to the method I’ve used.  Each have pros and cons.

After filling of the slots, the putty was drilled to be a tight fit over the pegs for the mechanical advance counterweights preventing movement.  After immobilisation was confirmed the distributor was reassembled and installed.
