θ vs. ð: mesma forma com a boca; três diferenças de pronúncia:
1) θ = sem voz; ð = com voz
2) θ tem mais tensão nos músculos faciais e do pescoço
3) θ produz mais aspiração
AS 6 REGRAS:
1) A maioria das palavras que começam por TH- tem o som de θ.
Exemplos: thanks, theme, thick, think, thirsty, thorn, thumb, thyroid
Exceções: the, this, that, these, those, they, them, their, there, then, than, thus, though, Thomas, Thailand, thyme
2) -TH final é θ.
Exemplos: booth(s), health(s), sixth(s), teeth, width, with
3) -THE final é normalmente ð.
Exemplos: bathe, breathe, clothe
Exceção: clothes
4) -THY final é normalmente θ.
Exemplos: earthy, healthy, wealthy
Exceção: worthy
5) A maioria das palavras comTH dentro tem o som de ð.
Exemplos: father, brother, farther, northern, together, clothing, smoothest, algorithm, rhythm
Exceções: anything, nothing, everything, bathroom, healthcare, athlete, cathedral, ethics, method, sympathy
6)TH incidental em "compound words" não tem o som de θ nem ð.
Exemplos: lighthouse, knighthood, pothead, anthill
