Vulnerability Response in ServiceNow is a great enterprise application for remediating vulnerabilities but not all vulnerabilities need to be resolved all the time. When exceptions need to be made for a vulnerability, ServiceNow has a great out of box (OOB) workflow that makes it easy to request a deferment on a vulnerable item or vulnerable group. While the OOB solution is simple, it does at least provide a good starting point for companies looking to have a more complex workflow attached to their vulnerability exception process.
The deferment process can be done on either vulnerable items, or vulnerable groups, and anyone that is assigned either a vulnerable item or group can work on that item and request a deferment directly from the form. The UI Page that pops up is very basic with the questions its asked, so often companies do request that additional fields be added or required to capture all necessary information which then gets passed along in the approval. Approvals are normally handled by a select vulnerability response group that ensures that the deferment is valid. Notifications can also be set up to inform the vulnerability response group of the upcoming expiration of a deferment.
