Flowering GARLIC MUSTARD: Catch & Eat now before it goes to seed!
I am always trying to balance the "invasive" plants that are also food and medicine in my landscape. They are gifts to be celebrated and utilized while also making sure they don't destroy the biodiversity of our wild gardens. So flowering garlic mustard is on the menu!

To control garlic mustard, meet it now in its flowering moment. Learn to ID, harvest and reign in this nutritious, prolific wild edible.

Garlic mustard is a biennial scientifically called Alliaria petiolata of the Brassicaceae family. Now, in its second year of life, it starts to flower, and now is the time to control it. Don’t let it go to seed if you don’t want it to spread in your landscape.

Identification in flowering stage, typically in second year mid spring.
White flower with 4 petals in the shape of a cross or an x.
From the pollinated flowers, thin green long seed pods emerge called siliques.
Arial leaf triangular to heart shaped with irregular teeth.
Leaves alternate up the stem.
ID odor and flavor: pungent, garlic-like, mild to strongly bitter.
Branched taproot; whitish color; horseradish flavor and odor

Easy to pull these plants out now since all their energy has ascended into making flowers and seeds.

Eat what is tender and tasty to you: flower, immature seed, tender stem, leaf. Eat raw or cook.

Happy harvesting!
