Material:
A box containing:
Green colored stamps with the number 1 written on each one
Blue colored stamps with the number 10 written on each one
Red colored stamps with the number 100 written on each one
Green colored stamps with the number 1000 written on each on
One large green skittle
Ten small red skittles
Ten small blue skittles
Ten small green skittles
One red disc
One blue disc
One green disc
A tray with a pencil, a pencil holder, a ruler, a protector and grid paper.
Presentation:
Invite a child
Introduce the activity
This time, the guide bring blank paper or larger grid paper
Set up the material on the table as usual manner
Write a large number: 5125. Introduce this number as a dividend
Tell him: The dividend is the amount that we are going to share.
Write and Introduce the devision sign,
Write another number: 5, and introduce it as a devisor and it tells us how many we are going to share equally our dividend
Write the equal bar = and introduce that this is also an equal sign
Create the dividend with the stamps at the lower part of the table, right on the edge, making sure that each category aligned to each compartment.
Look at the devisor and tell the child that we have skittles for the devisor
Tell him that this time we are going to use 5 green skittles
Place the skittle horizontally just below the box and leaving the space between them.
Ask the rules for the devision or remind him: When we do devision we share equally and everyone receive the same amount
Start sharing the stamps to the green skittles from the highest category. In this case we start from the thousands. Saying: one for you, one for you, one for you …
When you get to a stamp that can not be shared, place that stamp directly next to the box at the corresponding compartment
Exchange to the ten from the lower category. For example: 1 thousand to 10 hundreds
As soon as you exchange place the stamp that you exchange to the compartment
Continue sharing until all the stamps are shared equally.
When done
Ask the child: How do we find the answer?
The child response: In what one green skittle receive
Point out in one of the green skittle (at the far right)
Show the child how to record the amount on the paper, starting from the thousands

Invite the child to read the whole operation

Invite the child to do another one
