In this video, I’ll answer the question – what is rare earth?  What do we use it for? And why is it so important?  The rare earth category is made up of 17 metals included on the periodic table of elements. Three rare earth elements, scandium, yttrium, and lanthanum, are in Group 3 of the periodic table while the remainder are in the first extended row under the main section (cerium through lutetium). Rare earth metals are also known as the lanthanides, although scientists debate about which of these 17 elements actually qualify as rare earths. The complete list of rare earth metals is scandium, yttrium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium.
